It really is that simple.

Now days, many liberal Democrats appropriate the term “progressive.” But “progressive” actually means more than a liberal support of human rights. “Progressive” also means defending economic rights.

Because, when you don’t have money, you get overlooked. No matter your human rights.

Can’t we have rights AND live in a meritocracy? Of course we can. That’s the real meaning of progress—when you can use your God-given talents to go somewhere, to build something—that’s meaningful—to you and some portion of the larger world.

Take time to vet the candidates. Whenever possible, avoid the glossy candidate who accepts money and favors from wealthy special interests. They are compromised. Instead, look for someone who has more accomplishment than privilege, like Katie Porter. Look for a hard worker, for someone who exudes purpose. Look for someone who doesn’t fuss with their hair too much. They are the real deal.

Democracy Now is the longest standing, in-your-face, independent, progressive news broardcast—that actually reports the news. The program airs live each weekday from 8-9:00 AM Eastern. The first 12-13 minutes cover the day’s domestic and international news. Then going deeper, the show interviews the principal people involved, ranging from eye witnesses and front-line activists, to professors and policy wonks.

Investigative journalist, Amy Goodman, co-founded Democracy Now in 1996 and is the show’s primary host. As she reports and talks to people, Goodman avoids making political commentary. She doesn’t need to. She has compassionate eyes. And the stories speak for themselves.

So there is no commentary, no talking heads. Does that mean Democracy Now is perfectly unbiased? No. The show maintains a pronounced leftist bias. It is aimed toward the interests of regular folks, instead of wealthy corporations and billionaires. For instance, if you wonder why a group of people are protesting somewhere in the world, go to Democracy Now to find out.

But if Democracy Now is biased, can the news coverage be factual? Yes, absolutely. Media Bias Fact Check gives Democracy Now the highest credibility rating. Any meaningful bias is, after all, based on hard facts.

So Democracy Now is both left-leaning and factual. But what, exactly, makes it independent? Amy Goodman gives a simple answer: “Not being sponsored by corporations.”

Democracy Now covers important news stories that are under-reported by mainstream corporate news media. Thus, the new documentary about Amy Goodman is entitled: Steal This Story, Please!

Amy Goodman is much admired for her dedication to pro-democracy journalism, and her courage. I can’t wait to hear her story, and see how Democracy Now became a reality.

If we get MAGA out of power, we may be able to address political corruption and rebuild American democracy. However, my hopes are not high. Let’s face it. Many Democratic Congress Members LIKE wealthy donors. Many big corporations and billionaires DISLIKE democracy.

Little “d” democracy tends to balance power and curb corruption. It enables regular people to climb the economic ladder, based on merit. But the elite class intends to remain a small, exclusive group. There is more for them, when there is less for you. It is easiest for them, when it is hardest for you. It is risk-free for them, when you stand to lose everything—your rights, your job, your home, your health.

A multitude of bright lights in this country serve democracy and justice, from the old guard like Ralph Nader and Bernie Sanders, to young progressives like AOC and Zohran Mamdani. And, of course, huge numbers of ordinary, unknown people fight the Good Fight each and every day.

Yet with all this light, the world continues to grow darker. As it turns out, Evil must be more powerful than Good. Between global warming, threats of a nuclear WWIII, and possible nightmare AI outcomes… forget the Noncorporate Candidate list. We are too far gone for that.

Sen. Chris Murphy for the Job?

Chris Murphy would make an able Senate minority leader. He also has integrity. I noticed because, for a decade, I’ve kept a list of noncorporate political candidates. Murphy made the 2024 list when his campaign purposefully stated its rejection of corporate PAC contributions.

You may ask, “Why didn’t Murphy do that sooner, if he has so much integrity?” I am not sure. But I do know this: it is difficult for individuals to extricate themselves from a corrupt system. I grant “kudos” to anyone who pulls it off.

Known for his staunch advocacy for gun control, in 2024 "Murphy said he is now 'determined to right another wrong' when it comes to his reelection and promised to not accept any corporate or political action committee donations in his latest Senate campaign."

Bidenomics Boosted Democracy

The emerging economic policies of Bidenomics may have buoyed good-intentioned Democrats like Chris Murphy. (Two other incumbents were also added to the 2024 list.)

How so? President Joe Biden actively battled corporate power. (Which is probably the real reason he was not reelected.)

The hitherto corporate-friendly Joe Biden came to see that corporate power overwhelmed democracy and the American way of life. As President, he began to curb that power. He supported labor unions with his presence on the picket line. He aimed to invigorate market competition. And he began to bring manufacturing back to the US—with the stipulation that workers in these jobs would earn good union wages.

Bidenomics was the backdrop to restoring democracy and the American Dream. Imagine how the good guys and gals in Congress loved that! There is strength in unity. For the first time, in a long time, they could stand up to corporate power with the backing of the U.S. President.

Can Murphy Exert Impact?

Now we are considering Sen. Chris Murphy for Senate Minority Leader. But we must ask if he could exert any impact in that role. He has integrity. He has the fighting spirit. But what kind of power can a Senate Minority Leader, or any lawmaker in Congress, possess when the rule of law is null and void?

On Saturday, the Trump Administration ignored the court order issued by a federal judge, when two airplanes transporting alleged Venezuelan gang members to El Salvador were told to turn around. Many legal experts have warned that a Constitutional crisis officially begins when Trump outright refuses to follow court orders. That has now happened.

A new regime doesn’t play by the old rules of a government that it overturns. It makes its own new, shiney rules. So how can a Senate Minority Leader, from the old guard, block a new regime?

Instead of talking about Democratic Congressional leaders, maybe we need to discuss who can fill the office of a great strategic General. There needs to be an impactful movement of nonviolent warfare that resides outside of government. We need a Gandhi.

In my mind’s eye, yes, I can picture Chris Murphy taking on that role.

Every business must earn healthy profits. But healthcare insurance companies report billions in profit each year. United Healthcare led the pack in 2024, with a profit of $371.6 Billion. Of course, the healthcare industry is not the only industry that garners huge profits. Consider the fossil fuel industry, Big Banking, Big Agriculture, or the military industrial complex. They all report huge profits and commonly render detrimental harm to people and the planet. Gross inequality and global warming would not exist without the unfettered greed of large corporations.

When considering Brian Thompson’s murder, there has to be a theoretical question. Is there a connection between corporate greed and vigilante retribution? The answer is probably “yes.” And it is a fearsome answer. It reveals the terror of a lawless and uncontrollable society.

On the other hand, do powerful corporations obey the law? Mostly, yes. Except… wealthy special interest groups can change the laws they don’t like. They use political influence to rig the legal system in their favor; they lobby and bribe lawmakers. As a result, there is little effective legal recourse to their unseemly behaviors—that common sense tells us should be criminal.

It is easy to imagine that Thompson’s shooter may feel he enacted justice, which could not be achieved in any other way. Lawlessness is terrifying, on both sides of the coin.

Should Scientists Be Politicians?

Now, I am not against scientists going to Washington DC. Likewise: mental health professionals, environmentalists, teachers and physicians. They should go there as consultants.

You may be brilliant in your professional field. But you cannot be a brilliant politician unless you understand that Big Money undermines democracy.

Oregon had two primary candidates who support peace, climate action, and universal healthcare. Their successful opponents, if elected to Congress, will NOT be successful at legislation on these issues--because they are captured by wealthy special interests before they start the job. They are beholden to big donors. They are bought! (That’s how they won. They win by cheating. Can I spell it out any more clearly?) Such proprietary representatives will propose tiny, incremental steps toward climate action and/or universal healthcare—and nothing further.

Shame on 314 Action. Their aim is to elect “scientists who will use evidence and facts to fight climate change and fix our broken healthcare system.” That may be a noble pursuit. Except, the problem with Congress is not ignorance. The problem is that Congress Members are blocked and punished, or controlled and rewarded, by wealthy special interests—exactly like the fossil fuel and healthcare industries.

(Meanwhile. AIPAC supports the interests of a foreign country. It should have no influence on American politicians, whatsoever.)

Big Money, Big Power, Big Corruption

Oregon is not the only place that bows to Big Money. It happens all over the world. Here’s the bottom line: Money leads to power and Big Money has too much power. Power leads to corruption and Big Money corrupted the American political system. A corrupted system cannot work as intended.

Greed is the most ordinary human weakness—no matter how it is cloaked in pretty rationalizations. We are ALL susceptible to it, at any station of life, if we are not careful. But due to the size and range of influence, the greed of billionaires and big corporations is massively dangerous.

We need to get Big Money out of the American political and governmental systems. Until we can legislate laws that do that, the people must elect political candidates who reject Big Money—so THEY can write THAT legislation. And THEN Congress is free to produce legislation for meaningful climate action and comprehensive universal healthcare.

First this, then that. Fair elections are a catalyst to the benefits that a democratic people rightfully deserve.

• Joe Biden fights corporate power, which has grown way too big for its britches!

• Joe Biden stands for workers, and literally stood with UAW strikers. (Biden did not forget railroad workers after ending their strike. They got their sick days shortly afterward.)

• With one stone, Biden's nearly-impossible-to-pass Bipartisan Infrastructure Law catches 4 birds, which begin to:

  • 1) Bring manufacturing home.

  • 2) Rebuild infrastructure.

  • 3) Create good-paying jobs.

  • 4) Protect the environment.

  • I want to see these programs advance and flourish, and will be following the Maps of Progress.

• The Biden Administration has accomplished a LOT. But positive news is often under-reported by the media. You may want to take a look at the Biden-Harris Record for yourself.

• Yes, Biden is old. But I have no fear of him failing mentally or physically. The United States has a very competent VP. Should Kamala Harris need to step up, she is fully capable of realizing Biden's vision—and to take it to the next level.

• Finally, I will forever admire Joe Biden for the way he artfully turned-the-tables on heckling Republican Members of Congress, during the 2023 State of the Union Address.

The people on the 2024 Noncorporate Progressive Candidates List get it: Big Money corrupts. If elected, they will serve YOU (not wealthy donors).

Being on the List is not an endorsement, however. Some of the candidates are inexperienced. Sometimes, there are two or more noncorporate candidates running in the same district; I list them all. Finally, if you are a strategic voter like me, you may vote for a corporate Democrat who has a better chance of winning. For instance, in 2024 I will vote for the Harris/Walz ticket, even though they are not listed here.

The List is a statement about the corrupting influence of Big Money in politics. The List applauds the men and women who understand that Big Money destroys democracy and, take actions to reject corporate PAC donations.

I hope you are inspired to elect a noncorporate, unbought candidate, whenever it does not risk a Republican win. We need to hang on to the little democracy that is still intact—so we can fight another day. Then we must push through many democratic reforms:

2024 Progressive Policies

Here’s a “word cloud” that combines the progressive policies that are supported by most, if not all, noncorporate candidates running for national office in 2024.

Listed candidates are vetted in the following ways:

1. A statement on a candidate’s campaign website that declares they reject corporate contributions.

2. A social media or email reply that confirms the candidate rejects corporate contributions.

3. A review of an incumbent candidate’s past fundraising on OpenSecrets.

4. Candidates who accept campaign contributions from AIPAC and/or its United Democracy Project Super PAC are rejected from the list. AIPAC aims to block progressive candidates.

NOTE: The 2024 List of Noncorporate Progressive Candidates is different from my previous lists. This time, NO Republican candidates are reviewed or included. The GOP is currently governed by far-right MAGA extremists and poses a fascist threat to our nation.

Agape Love and Public Servants

Agape love is an admirable quality in a public servant. But it is absolutely essential for an American democracy—where people look out for their own interests, while they respect the rights of others.

Agape love is unconditional. It is stable. It does not fluctuate because of emotional feelings, or yearnings for personal security and/or gain. Agape is a principle that is independent of the people, places, or circumstances involved. It is impartial.

You can see agape love in President Biden's favorite goal: to put people back to work in good-paying jobs. (Check out the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the Chips and Science Act.)

Bernie Sanders highlighted agape love, when he asked his New York City crowd at a 2019 rally, "Are you willing to fight for someone you don't know?"

Cornel West and Marianne Williamson

Both Cornel West and Marianne Williamson have announced their candidacy for the 2024 presidential election. Each one has followed a career path centered on spirituality and morality. They both know something about agape love.

Each candidate challenges an amoral corporate power structure that creates runaway financial inequality. And each candidate is well equipped to broaden the narrow social values held by Christian white nationalists.

Cornel West is the Dietrich Bonhoeffer Chair at Union Theological Seminary. He is a professor of philosophy, with a special interest in religious life and public institutions. He also taught at Harvard, Yale (briefly), and Princeton. He is a longtime, left-wing political activist.

West is running as a third-party candidate, with the People’s Party. The slogan of his presidential campaign says, “Justice is what love looks like in public.” His Platform policies include:

• True democracy

• A revitalized economy

• Medicare for All

• The end of wars

• Civil liberties expansion

• Environmental protection and climate action

Marianne Williamson is a spiritual self-help author and lecturer. No one blends the spiritual, psychological, and intellectual better than Williamson. She served as minister in the Unity Church for five years. 2024 is her second run for president.

The Williamson presidential campaign slogan is, “Dedicated to the people.” She is running as a Democrat. Her FDR-infused policy platform surrounds a 21st Century Bill of Rights that covers:

• The right to a job that pays a living wage

• The right to a voice in the workplace through a union and collective bargaining

• The right to universal quality health care

• The right to a cost-free higher education

• The right to good, affordable housing

• The right to a clean environment and a healthy planet

• The right to a meaningful endowment of resources at birth

• The right to sound banking and financial services

• The right to an equitable and fair justice system

• The right to cultural and civic involvement in democratic life

Agape Love to Cancel Cruelty

Many Americans are troubled by the cruelty of a far-right movement that promotes life-threatening abortion bans, callous anti-trans laws, and migrant trafficking trickery. It is baffling, and dangerous, that Christian nationalists—who proclaim God’s grace (undeserved favor) for their own salvation—show little grace to people who are outside their cultural circle.

Neither Marianne Williamson, nor Cornel West, may have a good chance to win their elections. But their campaign narratives should inspire millions of people with the vision of a kinder, more just, American morality.

We need an antidote to the cruelty. Hopefully, people will lend each of these candidates a respectful ear. Both West and Williamson demonstrate a mature, insightful agape love. And that is what it’s going to take, to cancel the oppression and cruelty that is sweeping the United States.

Labor Day in September

The Gilded Age, from about 1870 to 1900, was a time of rapid industrialization and robber barons—who exploited their workers—and caused a deep decline in working conditions. This, in turn, spurred the growth of labor unions and strikes.

In early Autumn of 1886, the Knights of Labor held a major convention in New York City. Around this time, many U.S. labor unions began to celebrate Labor Day in September. In 1894, President Grover Cleveland conformed to the September date when he declared Labor Day as a national holiday.

However, May Day was already a significant date for workers, worldwide.

The May 1894 Pullman Strike

To end the riotous Pullman Strike that began in May of 1894, President Grover Cleveland ordered National Guardsmen to fire into the crowd of strikers. Nearly 30 strikers were killed, and many more wounded.

Labor lost the Pullman Strike. Labor leader Eugene V. Debs ended up in prison. President Cleveland tried to placate an angry, and still powerful, labor movement.

In order to restore some popularity with workers, Cleveland signed a bill into law on [the 28th of] June 1894, which made Labor Day a national holiday.

The rest of the world ignored the September date for Labor Day.

International Workers’ Day in May

In 1891, the International Workers’ Association had already decided to observe Labor Day on May 1st—the anniversary of the 1886 U.S. general strike that culminated in the deadly Chicago Haymarket Riot.

What does International Workers’ Day stand for? It reminds us that labor unions fight for the rights and safety of all workers;

• Shorter work hours

• Safer work environments

• Fair wages

• The elimination of child labor

• State-regulated labor conditions

• Paid vacation and paid leave

Historically, important labor wins were only achieved after a bloody battle between strikers and the forces of capitalism. Remember that when you celebrate May Day.

Labor in America Today

The right balance between labor and capital provides the sweet spot for an American Dream. How well do you think the United States regulates labor conditions, compared to decades past? Can we retrieve the American Dream? Can we avoid a re-emergence of child labor? Can we build another labor movement that is powerful enough to counter the present “Gilded Age?”

Independent news organizations can represent any political bias or focus on any particular subject matter. The List contains everything from...

Corporate owned and sponsored news networks tend to have a conservative bias. Independent news is often left-leaning. Thus, this list includes many fairly progressive news outlets.

The list is limited to 200 entries. But many more good independent, noncorporate news outlets exist. I have added a “✴️” to my personal favorites.

Least Biased Independent News & Commentary

• The Associated Press (AP) - A provider of highly factual, highly credible global news reporting. It is a cooperative, and is primarily funded by the American newspaper and broadcast members that own it.

• BBC Global News Podcast - The BBC is the world’s leading public service broadcaster. It is funded by the UK license fee and the BBC's commercial subsidiaries. That is, this news source is largely audience-funded.

• Ground News - A platform that helps you compare “news sources, read between the lines of media bias and break free from algorithms.” It is owned by Snapwise, in Ontario, and funded by subscription fees.

• NPR - This is America’s national public radio. It is funded by listeners and donors. Depending on the region, local NPR stations may lean right or left. The reporting is highly factual and credible.

• PBS - This is America’s public broadcasting service. It is funded by “viewers like you” and me. In addition, PBS is funded by an elite group of wealthy donors and non-profit foundations. PBS is highly factual and credible. Its bias is liberal and slightly conservative. (Not a typo; liberals are often financially conservative.)

• Reuters - A news agency that supplies information to “media organizations, technology companies, governments and corporations.” The nature of its business model, and type of customers, requires Reuters to be as unbiased as possible.

Independent Conservative News & Commentary

The following resources are biased toward the conservative and/or libertarian side of things. They are considered factual and credible.

• The Center Square - Conservative reporting. State and local government issues. This news outlet credits their sources; you decide if they are good or not. (I.e., watch for vague anonymous sources and articles based on studies that were funded by a wealthy special interest.) It is nonprofit, and financially supported by readers and donors. Donors may be wealthy oligarchs with a far-right agenda.

• The Dispatch - Provides “engaged citizens with fact-based reporting and commentary on politics, policy, and culture—informed by conservative principles.” They say, “We aim to be timely and topical, yes, but not be slaves to the relentless pace of the news cycle. We slow things down, deliberately—because we think the times require more deliberation.” It is primarily funded by subscribers.

• National Review - “National Review… [is] America’s most influential magazine for conservative news, commentary, and opinion… Its operations [are] supported by print and digital subscriptions, advertising, and the donations of generous readers who donate.” Note: some donors may be oligarchs.

The Importance of Facts

Though facts may be interpreted in a variety of ways, the facts do not waver. (There is no such thing as an "alternative" fact.) Recognized facts allow honest, intelligent debate. Original sources offer the most solid facts. Here are a few important online sources of original information:

• Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) - Public health data and information.

• Congress.gov - Particularly good for government data and legislative bills.

• C-SPAN - The unfiltered spoken words of government leaders.

• Federal Election Commission (FEC) - Check federal election results, review contribution limits, research legal resources, and more.

• Global Climate Change - "Vital signs of the planet," provided by NASA.

• Nonpartisan Watchdog Agencies

  • Follow the Money - “A national… finance database of state and federal contribution data.”

  • GovTrack.us - The “leading non-governmental source of legislative information and statistics.” User-friendly. Follow developing issues.

  • Open Secrets - "The nation's premier research and government transparency group tracking money in politics, and its effect on elections and policy."

Expert Interpretation of the Facts

As you study a topic, pay careful attention to the sources who are experts in the field. Experts are very good at:

• Evaluating the credibility of sources

• Sifting through tons of information

• Debating their equally adept colleagues on differing views

• Spotting weak arguments or suspect statements

• Making sense of it all

Follow the Opposition

In the interest of objectivity, follow the opposition enough to understand where it's coming from. Improve the News helps you do just that, without wasting time. Find news coverage from either the left or right. In fact, you can set preferences for news coverage from any or all angles:

• Political stance - left vs. right

• Establishment stance - critical vs. supportive

• Writing style - provocative vs. nuanced

• Depth - breezy vs. detailed

• Shelf-Life - short vs. long

• Recency - evergreen vs. latest

Why Independent News Media Is Important

Network news is entertaining and easy to digest. But when you’re ready to advance to the "big picture," you must add independent news outlets to your daily news consumption. Exposure to diverse viewpoints is the foundation of an informed opinion.

Mainstream media (MSM), or network news, maintains a corporate bias, regardless of whether it tends to be liberal (e.g., MSNBC) or conservative (e.g., FOX News). MSM supports wealthy special interests, and reports for the views of an elite status quo.

You need additional information. You need coverage of news events that are relevant to ordinary people, with explanations on how the issues may impact YOU.

Let’s be very clear. Corporate media is not “objective;” they are not the “referees” trying to provide “all sides of the story.” Corporate media are profit-making entities owned and controlled by the ruling class and some of the wealthiest people in the country. And, like all private corporations, they have an agenda.

"Fair & Balanced" Is a Relic of the Past

In the olden days, TV and radio stations covered both sides of a controversial topic and gave political candidates equal airtime. But mainstream network news is no longer regulated. The FCC Fairness Doctrine was overruled in 1987.

[The] Fairness Doctrine… (1949–87)… required licensed radio and television broadcasters to present fair and balanced coverage of controversial issues of interest to their communities, including by devoting equal airtime to opposing points of view… Also, candidates for public office were entitled to equal airtime.

Evaluating a News Source

Get into the habit of evaluating the reliability and bias of your information resources. When looking at a news story, ask yourself the following questions:

• Is it factually correct?

• What is the context? (A quote taken out of context, for instance, could be misleading.)

• Is the information up-to-date?

• Does it include all pertinent information? What is left out, if anything? (Is the story slanted?)

• Why are they telling me this? Be alert for sources that publish marketing or public relations (PR) material, as if it is objective knowledge. (By the way, "propaganda" was the term used before "PR" became popular.)

• How does this news story impact my emotions? (Propaganda is designed to stir emotions, either positive or negative.)

Political Discussions

Now that you're well informed on progressive politics, you'll be eager for political discussions with the people you know. Get some tips for productive and persuasive political conversations at "The Secret to Political Persuasion," which suggests that you ask, listen, reflect, agree, and share.

It is possible to persuade people--to consider the progressive point of view--without getting into fights. Stay strong!

Maybe I feel a little bad about my tweets to “Dear @POTUS,” exhorting him to “rein-in corporate power” and “cut the purse strings” and “make them hate you” and… more things like that. Apparently, President Joe Biden was already clipping the wings of Big Money with his “Middle-Out” economic policies.

There are plenty of devoted Democrats who would claim Biden is a second FDR. I will never go that far. But I am now appreciating that not all his accomplishments are as “weak sauce” as I thought. Biden’s economic policies, perhaps his biggest accomplishment, are kind of hazy—because they are behind the scenes.

Biden has corralled his government agencies into a joint mission: to build more market competition. As they go about their business, from OTC hearing aids to a new flame retardant vendor, each agency contributes to President Biden’s Executive Order on Promoting Competition in the American Economy.

Biden’s competitive economy is a decisive shift away from trickle-down Reaganomics, and it should be far-reaching and long-lasting. Dayen compares the change to turning a battleship. It is ponderous and slow. It is also very hard to turn around, yet another time, for future administrations.

Runaway corporate power is a big problem in an economy that wants to build a middle-class. So it is very gratifying that someone is finally reining it in. It almost makes me want to see Joe Biden serve another term—to give him time to turn the battleship all the way around.

While serving as Chairman of the Senate Republican Campaign, Sen. Rick Scott published the 12-Point Rescue America Plan. In Point 6, he says, “All federal legislation sunsets in 5 years. If a law is worth keeping, Congress can pass it again.” Federal legislation includes Social Security, Medicare, veteran benefits, housing and food supplementation programs, etc.

Republicans consider many federal programs to be examples of “socialism.” If in power, do we really think the GOP would pass them again?

In the next few days, we will know if voters have managed to keep our fragile democracy going. I am hopeful.

Lesser-Evil Is an Awful Choice

How frustrating it is, to always vote for the lesser-evil—those who can barely hang on to our current citizen benefits. Typical Democratic candidates “boldly” promise to protect the ACA, Social Security, voting rights, et cetera—while the original politicians and activists who fought to win these rights (some of them rolling over in their graves) wonder when today’s Congress will expand on them, get on with Universal Healthcare, and… what the Hell happened to reproductive freedom!?!

Yet, American voters must support Do-Little Democrats, in order to save our country from far-right-nationalist-Christian-white-supremacy-fascism that the lost Republican Party now offers. (Somebody put out a search party for the good ol’ conservative GOP.)

[Yes. Honest, intelligent progressives need honest, intelligent conservatives. We need to argue and debate with political-others, who have a different view on the problems and solutions. That’s how we expose the weaknesses in the other guy’s argument, and vice versa. That’s how Congressional colleagues can develop fairly good legislation, which will safely advance progress. Wash and repeat.]

We Need Democratic Reforms

We don’t need to be caught in the lesser-evil dilemna each and every election. The United States can institute meaningful democratic reforms. Of course, that means a fight… waged with full-strength People-Power.

Big Money and the 2-Party Duopoly are not going to like the Democratic Reform Movement. Nobody likes a power reduction. Remember to cast them an insincere thought and prayer.

We must support the groups that are already working on various essential democratic reforms. I’ll list a few examples; there are many more:

We must inform and enlighten regular people about democratic reforms. (Most people have never thought about them!)

Introducing Canine Friends in D.C.

Addressing the second goal of inlightenment, how would a person help to heighten the awareness of democratic reforms? There are many ways.

Something I have been thinking of is a storyline about a cute scruffy little dog who gets involved with human progressive activists. His name is Chester, a bichon-poodle mix (maybe) with hard to manage hair.

Through Chester’s fictional experience with his humans, political activism, and his own contributions to democracy(!), readers should learn that American needs more democracy, and how to get it. At least, that’s what I’m going for

There’s One Big Difference

There is one huge difference between the Democratic Party and the GOP. The Democratic Party is not completely sold out to an elite corporate oligarchy. There is a noncorporate progressive faction in the Democratic Party.

This noncorporate progressive faction may not appear to get much done, but that is because Big Money blocks and punishes them. Big Money is ultra-powerful, and it doesn’t give a fig about regular people or American democracy. Big Money welcomes a corporate fascist state.

Never the less, noncorporate progressive Members of Congress are very important.

People should be in the streets 24/7, fighting for stronger rights and for democratic reforms. When we put pressure on elected officials to do the right thing, we’re not just calling them out to vilify them. No. What we are actually doing is empowering our noncorporate progressives. When the Establishment Dems look at those progressive Members of Congress, they should see an endless horde of angry voters, who demand justice, standing right behind them. Then they know that they have to sacrifice a few drops from the gravy train, if they want their political careers to survive.

Rinse and repeat. Stand up and demand progress over and over and over—to make progress, even if it’s a little at a time. That is the people-power that good elected officials, those who are trying to do the right thing, need to have behind them—in order to be effective.

Bernie Sanders put it succintly: “Not me, us.”

Vote Blue in 2022

The noncorporate progressive faction makes it worthwhile to work on crucially necessary changes from within the Democratic Party. Until we establish democratic reforms, such as Ranked Choice Voting and Publicly-Funded Elections, working from within the Democratic Party is the ONLY way for The People to have an impact.

Speaking of democratic reforms, they are the primary reason to vote Blue in 2022. With a progressive toehold in Congress, and people-power amassed on the outside, we can push through democracy-loving legislative changes. That’s how we’ll get meaningful climate action and protect human rights. That’s how we’ll get free public college and universal healthcare. That’s how we restore voting rights and elect third-party candidates.

That’s why it is so important to vote Blue in 2022. The true Left needs to live another day, to keep that toehold in Congress—and to keep fighting the Good Fight, over and over and over. If we don’t stop the radicalized, white-nationalist, fascist Far-Right from overtaking the country, democracy is dead and people-power is over.

Talk to your nonpolitical friends, Independents, and normal conservative Republicans. Explain what is going on. Explain what they could lose, if we lose democracy: women’s rights, LGBTQ+ equalty, Social Security and Medicare, worker protections, and voting rights. And if nationalist extremists were to take full power, white people would no longer be safe. Any white person who publicly stood for equality and democracy could easily be targeted, like anti-racist protester Heather Heyer, who was run down by a car and killed at a 2017 white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. Most potential violence would probably come from lone terrorists, but militia groups would unofficially patrol the populace and people would be afraid to speak out for justice.

Much hangs in the balance. The United States faces two fascist forces. One is the corporate grip on American politics and governance. The second is a white and/or Christian nationalist movement that aims to take over the United States politically, or by force. The 2022 Election gives us a chance to stop one fascist threat: an authoritarian takeover of the United States.

Stay strong!

There is an elite corporate class that worked patiently and diligently, for decades, to overturn American democracy. They have been successful.

To restore democracy and combat Big Money in politics, many voters try to elect unbought, noncorporate candidates. However, in this 2022 Midterm Election, we must support any Democratic candiadte who’s in a close race against a Republican. (Hold your nose, if you have to.)

Live to Fight Another Day

An elite corporate oligarchy does not care about racism, reproductive rights, the Second Amendment, a climate “hoax,” the “Big Steal,” Christianity, or patriotism. These issues do not cost a company’s bottom line a single penny. But Big Money does capitalize (no pun intended) on fear-based, emotionally-charged cultural issues—and promotes them through corporate-owned-and-sponsored news media outlets.

Why? Emotionally charged issues divide the electorate and dilute the voting power of regular people. Big Money deliberately targets groups that are most comfortable with authoritarianism, such as far-right Christians and white nationalists, in order to populate the Republican Party with voters who will obediently support an emotionally-charged cultural agenda. Behind the scenes, however, the real agenda is economic. It is meant to enable rich corporate elites to amass yet greater wealth, power, and control. Thus, the corporate oligarchy effectively manipulates angry, fearful, low-information voters in order to wield power in Washington D.C. It’s called “corporatism” or “corporate fascism.”

The concept of fascism is dependent on the merger of corporations with the state. The power inherent in government is combined with corporate power. This brings the majority of power in a nation under a small group of individuals. This is known as an oligarchy. It is this combination of government and corporations that truly defines the concept of fascism.

In America, we often perceive fascism as when the government takes control of the corporations. What eludes our knowledge is just the opposite. It is possible for the corporations to appropriate the authority of the government. It is this type of activity that is unseen by the majority of Americans.

Corporate oligarchs now command a fair-sized block of voters who unwittingly promote an agenda that massages the One Percent—at the risk of their own civil liberties and economic well-being.

It’s up to the rest of us, who still have our heads on straight, to save democracy. We see the big picture. We’re filled with righteous anger about losing voting and reproductive rights. We are disgusted with the madness of relentless, corrupting, political interference from greedy corporate oligarchs—who would destroy the very planet, before curbing themselves. So, we will curb their abhorrent lack of self-discipline.

We are going to stir up a big, stormy Blue Wave for the 2022 Midterm Election, and push back hard. We must hold Democratic Party power in D.C., and use the time that buys us, to fight like hell for climate action, economic justice, and essential democratic reforms. Put a clothespin on your nose, if you have to, but live to fight another day.

Political Results of Wealthy Special Interests

Below, I have listed just a few of the corporate-fueled political shenanigans and coups de grâce, to illustrate my original point that Big Money kills democracy. (“My” original point? More the point of Noam Chomsky and many other great thinkers.) These plutocratic accomplishments were promoted and funded by people who represent wealthy special interests, like the Koch Brothers and other powerful oligarchs.

• The 1971 Powell Memo

• Ronald Reagan’s neoliberal agenda, 1981-1989

• The Welfare Reform Bill of 1996

• The Citizens United Supreme Court decision of 2010

• The Voting Rights Act gutted, 2013

• The January 6th, 2021 Capitol Insurrection

• The Supreme Court overruled Roe v. Wade, 2022

• The “largest known political advocacy donation [$1.6 billion] in U.S. history,” 2022

Currently, the independent state legislature (ISL) theory is on the Supreme Court docket. Depending on the Court’s decision, Republican state legislators could be able to legally overturn electoral votes in 2024. Corporate oligarchs are ready, and salivating, to claim their prize in total.

Unless democracy holds. Unless we make the stormy Blue Wave surge!

Where People-Power Steps In

It’s up to us, the voters. Human rights and policies that mean the most to us—like reproductive freedom, climate action, or sensible gun control—don’t have a chance under the authoritarian, fascist, corporate-funded rulership of an extremist Republican Party.

Far-right Republican voters may be nice people, when you know them in person. But they don’t get the big picture. The most highly bought-and-paid Republican motivators (i.e., elected leaders and media pundits) have taught them to hate Big Government, instead of Big Money (which, at this point, virtually controls government).

It is true… Democratic leadership eventually followed the GOP down a dark path, around the time of the 1993 Bill Clinton presidency. But the Democratic House and Senate are more diverse than their Republican counterparts. The Democratic composition includes a fair number of noncorporate, left-leaning Congress Members who resist corporate money and fight for people-oriented policies.

It is also true… there are a few noncorporate elected Republicans. They’re not household names like “Bernie Sanders” or “AOC.” The rare, unbought Republican does exist. But he or she carries little name recognition or clout.

While a large chunk of the Democratic Party is not exactly pretty, our good progressive and/or noncorporate Congress Members keep pulling the Party to the Left. This is the Democratic Party’s saving grace, and why it is useful (if not imperative) to elect Democrats in 2022 and 2024.

[MEANWHILE: keep on organizing, protesting, advocating, demonstrating, writing op-eds, contacting representatives, marching, and committing nonviolent acts of civil disobedience—for the sake of justice and democracy.]

So, this is pretty much it, for an unbiased listing of noncorporate candidates—no matter their political affiliation.

Big Money in Politics Tends to Corrupt

Do you agree that the love of money, or greed, is the root of all evil in American politics? And that too much money leads to too much power? And that much power is too often misused?

Unbought Candidates Are the Antidote

Then support, and vote for, unbought noncorporate candidates. They are the ones who serve their constituents, instead of Big Money & Power. They are the ones who balance power and reduce corruption.

The "Noncorporate Candidates Directory" at FriendsInDC.com includes candidates from all parties. I happen to be a Leftist. But I believe honest, intelligent Congress Members of all stripes can put their heads together and hammer out sensible legislation.

The noncorporate candidates listed below are running for national office in the 2022 July and August primaries. Being in the list is NOT an endorsement. But it does verify that listed candidates have stated that they reject corporate PAC money now, and will continue to do so in the future.

Maryland’s primary is in July. Arizona, Kansas, Missouri, Washington, Tennessee, Connecticut, Minnesota, Vermont, Wisconsin, Hawaii, Alaska, Wyoming, Florida, and New York hold their primaries in August. The states are listed here according to their primary date.

Do Your Homework Before Voting

Always visit a candidate’s campaign website, and do an Internet search of him or her, before giving your vote. Put on your critical-thinking-cap. Stay out of your emotions. Avoid making mental associations. Rather, pay close attention to the language. Political propaganda is designed to imply certain things… without actually saying so. Vague wording is crafted to help listeners “plug in” whatever they already believe or want to hear. (Remember Barrack Obama’s 2008 “Change” slogan? What “change” did YOU have in mind?)

Pay attention to the terms. Here are some examples: “Affordable healthcare” is weak sauce, compared to “universal healthcare.” “School choice” may dilute funding for “public education;” the terms represent different philosophies! “Election integrity” is not another way to say “voter rights.” Ask yourself, “What does this candidate mean by ‘immigration reform’—a stronger border wall, or that refugees are welcome?”

Stay Calm, Do Your Small Part

Politics are extremely distressing this summer. The January 6th Committee Hearings are fearsome. Horrible mass shootings have occurred. Reproductive Rights are chaotic, now left to each state to decide. And while the U.S. Supreme Court overrules other state decisions (i.e., New York gun legislation), it hints at further intrusions into people’s personal lives. Then, Attorney General Merrick Garland drives us crazy with a very slow investigation into the 2021 January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol. And, as per usual, there are looming threats of global warming and nuclear disaster (i.e., Ukraine’s nuclear power plants, or worse.)

Do not allow yourself to be overwhelmed. Stay calm. Do what you can, no matter how small and insignificant it may seem. No one person is responsible to fix the entire country. But together, with each person doing what they can reasonably do, we may make a real difference. For instance, it’s a small thing to cast your vote in the primary elections. Commit to doing that.
